The Clinician's Guide to Providing Effective Feedback to Families Affected by Autism manual, checklist and video were originally developed for a multidisciplinary class at the University of Colorado School of Medicine to teach clinicians best practices and common mistakes made in providing feedback to families after an Autism Spectrum Disorder evaluation. A key point discussed in these materials is the importance of a clinician's ability to establish a warm and supportive relationship with the family. In addition, specific strategies are outlined for setting up the feedback session, delivering the diagnosis and making recommendations. We hope the feedback video and materials now made available through Autism Speaks will promote thoughtful discussion about how to best give families critical information when their child receives an autism diagnosis.
