LeBron 34, that’s good, AD 33, Curry shot 5-21 ok how much we win by…huh? How did—- we lose? —26 huh.
We all saw this coming right. Yesterday’s game led to some hysterical 2005 looking spacing.
Defenses don’t care about Russ, but even then, none of the other Lakers garner enough attention from 3 so you get possessions like these.
Basketball gods are funny. Curry was inefficient, but had a triple double and led to a win. That's supposed to be Westbrook, but defenses guard Curry like this...fighting for their lives, defenses guard Russ like this, not at all. But there's one simple, yet difficult thing the Lakers need to do.
Here’s the hard truth. Frank Vogel and the Lakers are gonna have to take out Westbrook when he can’t get anything going. He has to be willing to bench Westbrook at times. Like for instance when Monty Williams sat Devin Booker because Booker wasn’t able to get things going.
There will be times where Westbrook will be dominant, but this team is not built for Westbrook. He’s another playmaker. Another ball handler, that's pretty good, but can't be enough to offset performances of LeBron and AD. You can't have lineups with Rondo, Westbrook, Howard because that's too many inconsistent non shooters. And it's all on Anthony Davis who won't get space.
One thing the Lakers need to do is run. And they did, but give Russ the ball for fastbreaks. And if nothing happens, pull it back out for Bron to run the offense.
At the same time, it's ONE GAME. Maybe this all doesn't workout and all these concerns are valid. But we knew that this would be the issue. Give them time to figure it out. They gotta figure out how to use Russ as an off-ball cutter, Russ and AD need to learn how to run a pick and roll together. Maybe Russ finds his mid range rhythm again because that would help a lot. There were so many times that the defense went under on screens in the midrange area and so many times where defenders backed up which took away Russ's speed away. If that midrange comes back, that same defense don't work. There's a lot of season left and they have one LeBron James who is gonna make it work or trade your ass. There's no in between.
Slim LeBron looked great, quick, active, fadeaway king, and he was running the break.
Also, yes Curry did not have a good shooting night, but the Warriors played Warriors basketball last night. And on opening day, I don't expect many teams to be able to keep up with that level of passing out the jump. It was exciting to see the Warriors play like this, with a deeper squad that can make shots and make good passes. There will be a video breakdown on them as well, because the basketball they played was so beautiful.
Let's not overreact, let's keep watching but either way it's gonna be a fun season. But what do you think? How far do you think the Lakers will go?
