It's summer in Namibia. Our rescuers start their patrol before sunrise and seals spend most of their day in the water. It's too hot on the beach. The ocean is refreshing for seals but icy cold for the rescuers, and they have opted for wet suits today. They know their rescue season is ending, but they are trying to catch a few more and save a few more lives before breeding season forces the team to take an involuntary break from rescuing.
They find their target - one of the last rescues for 2022. The seal is lucky because the animal cannot wait a few extra weeks for the OCN rescue team to return. Two loops of rope, possibly used to secure a windbreaker on the beach, are tightly wrapped around his neck.
Once the holidays are over, the rescuers will find many more items left behind by careless beach goers.
